Navaratan Dal as the name says is a lentil-based recipe prepared using nine different kinds of dals such as Tuver Dal, Chana Dal, Dhule Moong Dal, Hari Moong Dal, Dhuli Urad Dal, Kali Urad Dal, Kali Masoor Dal, Dhule Masoor Dal, Rajma etc.

Ingredients of Navratan Dal

  • Rajma – 1 tbsp
  • White Chickpeas – 1 tbsp
  • Black Chickpeas – 1 tbsp
  • Black eyed Peas– 1 tbsp
  • Dried Green Peas – 1 tbsp
  • Moong Dal – 1 tbsp
  • Urad Dal- 1 tbsp
  • Chana Dal – 1 tbsp
  • Toovar Dal – 1 tbsp
  • Onion – 1, finely chopped
  • Tomatoes – 2, finely chopped
  • Grated ginger – 1 tbsp
  • Garlic cloves – 4 Finely chopped
  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  • Carom Seeds – 1 tsp
  • Garam masala – 1 tsp
  • Dhaniya Powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Red chilli powder – ½ tsp
  • Turmeric Powder – ¼ tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Vegetable Oil – 1 tbsp
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing

How to Make Navratan Dal

  1. Clean and soak all lentils in water for 2 hours.
  2. Pressure cook soaked lentils with enough of water till its cooked.
  3. You should be able to mash lentil between your fingers.
  4. Add oil in a pan and when it’s warm, add cumin seeds and carom seeds.
  5. Saute it for few seconds.
  6. Add the chopped onions, ginger and garlic to it.
  7. When onions turn golden brown add tomatoes to it.
  8. Saute it nicely for few minutes till tomatoes turn mushy.
  9. Add cooked lentils, garam masala, chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, salt and mix it well.
  10. Close the pan and let it simmer for few minutes.
  11. Garnish some coriander leaves before serving.
